about

Written and recorded in the months following the death of member Daniel Watkins's mother, Mockingbird breaks from the wide, ambient swaths of Chestnut's previous releases and opts instead for swift emotional punches of guitar, percussion, and noise - all of which are punctuated by their proclivity for mining found sounds from late night television, YouTube rabbit holes, and field recordings from their Florida hometown.

This will be the fourth full length release from the band, now based in Los Angeles, and according to Watkins "by far our most accessible." He goes on to say that "the idea of being alienating in 2020 feels so pedestrian. We live with alienation everyday. With this record I was hoping to achieve something communal." Though he pulls back from too much sentiment by adding "my template for communal may differ from more popular definitions. It's less Kumbya and more like that footage of the Manson Family chanting in a field. There is a sinister flip side to it."

The album was produced by Watkins and will be released by Land Turtle Records.

about

Chestnut Los Angeles, California

"Sometimes, though, the world inverts, turns upside-down, and the unexplainable breaks through. Things don’t always make sense, and Chestnut’s shadow-strewn music is a part of that inversion.” (James Catchpole, A Closer Listen)
